Section Title
The Run-Down.
As actors, we know humans are complex, layered, contradictory. But casting professionals, writers, directors and producers are working within story structures. Characters are designed to serve the story — which means patterns emerge.
Understanding Type doesn’t put you in a box. It gives you clarity on how the industry sees your strengths, and the power to lean into it — or break out of it when you choose.
This workshop introduces you to Yat Malmgren’s Character Analysis — a technique that merges Jungian psychology with Laban’s movement theory. It’s one of the most practical and empowering tools actors can use to understand archetype.
What You’ll Learn.
-
The four Mental and Motion Factors that signify character, and therefore build Type.
-
The Six Inner Attitudes or ‘character types’ (Stable, Near, Adream, Mobile, Remote, Awake) and how they show up in auditions.
-
How to identify your own Type — the patterns you naturally play and the ones you’re cast in.
-
Why Type isn’t about stereotype, but about energy, choice, and story function.
-
Practical strategies to spot Type clues in audition scripts so you can hit the room with precision.
-
Formulas for understanding type through an analysis of your audition briefs.
-
How to play to type and against type in a way that opens doors.
What To Expect.
This is a live, interactive session. You’ll get:
